Moth bean, Vigna aconitifolia L. is a draught resistant legume, belonging to the family Fabaceae, commonly grown in arid and semiarid regions of India. It is an exceptionally hardy legume, known by various other names including mat bean, matki, Turkish gram, or dew bean. India’s driest state, Rajasthan is the major moth bean growing state, contributing to almost 86% production of the country. This crop is an indispensable component of cropping system prevailing in arid regions. This crop is also used as a source of feed, fodder, green manuring and green pasture apart from food.

Optimum temperature requirement for growth and development is 25-37ºc but it can tolerate high temperatures without any adverse effect on flowering and fruit development. Bulk of the cultivation is confined to drylands of arid zone with 250-500 mm rainfall requirement with arrange- ment of proper drainage.
